My MAC Lip Product Collection 2014!

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Although lately I've been a bit underwhelmed by MAC's usually extravagant limited edition collections I'm partially thankful - it has given me a bit more time to catch up on the products that the brand offers in their permanent line, and in addition to trying to build my MAC Eyeshadow palette, I've also taken time to dive a bit deeper into the lipstick offerings from the brand. I swatched out my MAC Lip Product Collection a bit over a year ago, so needless to say - it was ready for some updating!

Lipstick:

Amplified Finish =
MAC Blankety

MAC Blankety Swatch

Blankety - Ah, Blankety. If I had known how often I'd wear this, I would have purchased it forever ago. This is one of the most flattering nudes against my skin as it does have the pink tones to it but it is far from being too warm or too peach for my fair complexion. Because it has an Amplified finish, it is opaque and creamy and does not dry my lips in the least. This shade is definitely somewhere in my top 5 MAC Lipsticks - ever!

Cremesheen Finishes =

Creme 'd Nude and Goddess of the Sea

Creme d' Nude - The internet beauty community is so torn on this shade - half fears it gives them the "zombie lips" while the other maintains this is a holy grail. Personally, I rather like it on my skin. I feel the translucence of it makes it a whole heck of a lot more wearable than shades such as Myth (which I still struggle to make work!).

Goddess of the Sea - Limited Edition. I bought this for the packaging, I'm going to be straightforward on that. However, I actually adore the shade and it is incredibly easy to work with.

Lustre Finishes =

Viva Glam Gaga, Viva Glam V and Patisserie
From left to right - Viva Glam Gaga, Viva Glam V and Patisserie

From left to right - Viva Glam Gaga, Viva Glam V and Patisserie
Viva Glam Gaga - Limited Edition. I took the plunge and after a whole bunch of research, purchased this one eBay. I really was kicking myself for not getting this while in store, but I see the popularity in it. The Lustre formula makes it not too overbearing, but it still gives off great color.

Viva Glam V - This is the universally flattering lipstick. I've yet to see this look bad  on someone! If it don't know what else to wear, chances are that it's either this or Blankety.

Patisserie - I feel like this shade doesn't get talked about a whole lot, but it has become a staple in my collection. This is a darker take on nude pink without being too peach and almost has the slightest smidgen of brown in it. If you're looking for a good "office appropriate" shade, this is it.

Matte Finishes =

MAC Matte Lipsticks
From left to right, Dodgy Girl, Candy Yum Yum, Velvet Teddy and Kinda Sexy

Dodgy Girl - Limited Edition. There was no way I was going to allow myself to not get my hands on this one. It's a lovely lavender shade with enough pink in it to make it just a bit more wearable.

Candy Yum Yum - I Back2MAC'ed for this shade and in all honesty, I have a love hate relationship with it. The way it wears highlights any imperfections on my lips and they have to be in perfect shape to wear it. I should still try more to make it work though...

Velvet Teddy - I'm going to have to review this shade separately because it is just that incredible. This is literally the posterchild for why I like MAC's matte lipstick formula so much.

Kinda Sexy - Everyone says you need Kinda Sexy, but this one is literally so new that I haven't worn it yet (like earlier this week kind of new!). However, it swatches phenomenally - but also broke off in the tube when not in use. Hmm...

Retro Matte Finishes =

MAC Retro Matte Lipsticks
From left to right; Ruby Woo, Punk Couture and Instigator.

Ruby Woo - The infamous Ruby Woo. I had to have it because it's a total icon, but Goodness Gracious! If you try to swipe this on your lips like a regular lipstick...your lips are going with it! I do love that it gives such a lovely, Pinup look to the lips and literally lasts forever, but be ready for it with some lip balm!

Punk Couture - Limited Edition. How can I not buy a lipstick called Punk Couture? While press releases noted that this and Instigator were Retro Mattes, they are nowhere near as dry as Ruby Woo.

Instigator - Limited Edition. This one lightens up a good bit on the lips, you think? It almost looks black in the tube. For a retro matte, this one was even creamier than Punk Couture.

Satin Finish =

MAC Viva Glam II
Viva Glam II

MAC Viva Glam II Swatch
Viva Glam II
Viva Glam II - This is one of my all time favorite nude shades...like up there with Blankety! Since this shade is a satin it feels nearly matte and is completely opaque. It has tones of nude and brown and mauve and I absolutely adore it!

Lipglasses =

MAC Lipglass
From left to right; Underage, Viva Glam I and Docile

MAC Lipglass Swatches
From left to right; Underage, Viva Glam I and Docile
Underage - This is another shade I Back2MAC'ed for and I underestimated how pigmented it was! I was expecting this to be much sheerer than it is, but it makes a great layering shade.

Viva Glam I - Limited Edition, but still available on MAC's website. I think I can try to commit to Viva Glam I as my favorite MAC red, so I was so happy that this was released in a gloss as well. I'll wear this layered or without, it doesn't matter. I totally love this one.

Docile - Limited Edition, CCO find. I don't know how I managed to find this one at my local CCO but it just screams "me"! It is an incredibly wearable take on lavender when worn alone and really transforms depending on what you pair it with.

Kissable Lipcolour =

MAC Woo Me
Woo Me
MAC Woo Me Swatch
Woo Me

Woo Me - Limited Edition, CCO find. When the Kissable Lipcolour range was released for the second time with the Shop MAC/Cook MAC/Whatever the heck that was MAC collection, I jumped at the shade Enchantee, and sadly overlooked this one. Carly from The Science of Chic was talking about this shade a while back and after seeing her wearing it, I had to have it. This is what bloggers do - we make each other buy things. I really like this kind of shade - as you can probably tell - it's kind of a neutral with depth.

Dazzleglass =

MAC Baby Sparks
Baby Sparks
MAC Baby Sparks Swatch
Baby Sparks
Baby Sparks - Dazzleglasses are a pain to photograph! My camera couldn't really capture it, but Baby Sparks is a transparent warm, baby pink with purple and blue shimmers. For being a gloss with glitter in it, it is also surprisingly more comfortable to wear than I anticipated!

So apparently, this is going to have to be a yearly thing as I've added a whole lot to my collection since my first post!  What shades do you guys love from MAC? Let me know in the comments!

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick Swatch-A-Palooza!

Monday, July 7, 2014

I had so much fun with my Revlon swatch post that I decided to go ahead and make it a bit of a series to highlight collections of products that I have...well...quite a few of. It goes along the lines of the thought that if I keep repurchasing from a specific line - there must be something pretty darn good about it!

While not nearly as old as Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick line, Maybelline's Color Sensational Lipstick range has been a staple at the drugstore for a good amount of time by now. The permanent collection itself has every color family covered, and what I really enjoy is that they make it so easy to shop! Everything is broken down by color family, even down to occasionally making the caps a different color to suggest the family the shade might be in. From a consumer's viewpoint, it's never really a confusing task to find what I am looking for from the brand, which was very smart on their part!

Maybelline is also a bit of the "MAC of the Drugstore" when it comes to limited edition collections - and I fall for them just the same. There are shades that get very hyped up to the point where a lot of us in the beauty community find ourselves stalking our local drugstores and...dare I admit it...looking to Ebay for items we couldn't seem to find. I've seen a shade touted "Hard to Find" for as high as $20..a lipstick that retailed for less than half of that! (and don't even get me started on the matte Color Tattoos from last fall...OMG).

Overall, I'm a bit of a sucker for Limited Editions, which I will include here, but I have a really great opinion on the permanently available shades as well - so lets get on to those swatches, shall we?

From left to right - Pink Sands, Born With It, Pink & Proper and Make Me Pink
Pink Sands - Ah, Pink Sands. I was young; naive...maybe. It's awful - sheer, but shimmery and gritty and I maybe wore this once. I purchased this one a LONG time ago when I was first getting into makeup.

Born With It - Since we opened the swatches on such a negative note, let's move onto my all time favorite! Born With It bears Maybelline's tagline, and for good reason. It's natural but refined - my perfect MLBB shade.

Pink And Proper - This is a light neutral to slightly warm toned pink and while it isn't anything groundbreaking in terms of color, it wears nicely and bears a formula that nicely represents the line.

Make Me Pink - Since this one is a bit cooler toned, it gets a bit more wear from me. I have a lot of shades in this kind of color family from other brands, but this could potentially be a dupe for a few popular higher end lipsticks - I'll have to check my stash and get back to you!

From left to right - Fuchsia Fever, Bit of Berry, Warm Me Up and Yummy Plummy
Fuchsia Fever - I don't understand why I don't wear this more. This one is a very blue toned fuchsia shade and has nearly a duo-chrome feel without really having a shimmer to it. I can't explain it but it is VIBRANT.

Bit of Berry - I need to do a post of the lipsticks my sister steals from me the most, because this would be near the top of the list. This one is a true cranberry shade and because it has a cream finish, it really sets itself apart from similar colors in my collection - you know how I am with mattes!

Warm Me Up - The name of this one terrifies me, but I actually found this quite flattering. It really is a slightly darker, slightly warmer toned version of Born With It and for some reason this color family actually flatters me. Who woulda thought?

Yummy Plummy - I purchased this before I heard all the hype about this being a dupe for MAC Plumful (which I don't have), but I really like the neutral tone to this one!

From left to right - Nude Lust, Truffle Tease, Sin-A-Mon and Nude Embrace (LE)

Nude Lust - The Maybelline Nudes Collection is giving me LIFE! I've really been appreciating a nude lip in the past year and Maybelline is kind of being my enabler. Nude Lust is on the lighter half of the range - maybe the second or third lightest?- but I find that I'm fair enough that it doesn't give me zombie lips. I really appreciate the slight pink tone to this.

Truffle Tease - This one is the warmest of the nude bunch, but it actually does work on my skin - with the right look.

Sin-A-Mon - I feel like this is a true caramel shade, and the translucence of it really makes it work against my skin.

Nude Embrace - This shade was limited edition from the spring Nudes collection that Maybelline released and if you simply glance at it, you'll understand why I love it. It's a mauve toned nude that is SUPER cool toned and nearly unhealthy looking (in the best way possible, I swear) and I absolutely ADORE it.

From Left to Right - Pink Pop, On Fire Red, Hot Plum and Brazen Berry

Pink Pop - This is another case of "why don't I wear this more?". Are we sensing a color theme here? Pink Pop really is a vivid Barbie pink, but it has a refined quality to it that is just really, really nice.

On Fire Red - I might be cheating a bit with this one, because it is still quite new and I haven't had an opportunity to wear it yet. It is, however, in my "to wear this season" basket. In the photograph it leans a bit warmer, but in person it is a bright, cherry red.

Hot Plum - I feel like this shade has the best color intensity out of the Vivids line. It has more initial opacity and white it still has a creme finish, it doesn't have quite the sheen that the others do. By the way, if you missed out on Daddy's Little Girl from the MAC Archie's Girls collection...give this one a little look see.

Brazen Berry - Everyone and their mother was talking about this being a dupe for MAC Heroine and I TOTALLY disagree. Same color family, yes - but this is lighter, has a strong sheen to it and a very translucent quality. Maybe what makes Heroine for me is the matte texture? Who knows...Either way, the semi-sheer quality to this one makes it very pretty to wear.

From Left to Right - Porcelain Pink, Smooth Taupe and Nude Nuances (All LE)
Porcelain Pink - Anyone else remember this collection? And how much of a pain in the butt it was to get all the shades? UGH. Either way, this shade isn't a good representation of Maybelline's formula - it's quite patchy and I normally just use it for a mixing shade.

Smooth Taupe - How this shade didn't give me lips that could cast me as an extra on The Walking Dead suprises me, but I'd assume the translucency has something to do with it. Not taupe by ANY stretch, this is more of a true translucent beige.

Nude Nuances - This shade was where the hype was at! Tumblr was ABLAZE with talk of this being a dupe for Innocence, Beware from MAC and since I missed the entire Venomous Villains collection (I'm still sore about that one) I HAD to snatch this one up. It is a slightly peachy light nude and actually does look quite flattering!

From left to right - Violet Intrigue, Lavender Voltage and Midnight Plum (All LE)

Violet Intrigue - Out of the three, I found this one to be the most wearable - it has a warmth to it that kind of draws it back to earth. This collection was a perfect representation of Maybelline's formula - creamy and opaque but not so creamy that it wears off quickly.

Lavender Voltage - Not exactly a lavender, but this is a VIVID violet shade. Love.

Midnight Plum - NARS Train Bleu, MAC Cyber, Rimmel Kate Moss 04? Yep. They're sisters...not twins. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Maybelline's Color Sensational range is really one of those lines that actually has something for anyone - the formula is (for the most part) consistent and they really do have all color bases covered.

Now if they would release some mattes...

That wraps up our second Swatch-A-Palooza! Let me know in the comments what range you would like to see me break down next - if I have a substantial collection of them, I'd be more than interested! Take care!

Essie Collection Swatches!

Thursday, May 15, 2014

Its a strange feeling when you fill up three entire nail wheels with swatches and still feel like you haven't even scratched the surface of what a brand offers. I really do tend to gravitate toward the Essie line because it offers so much - between the excessive amount of colors available in the brand's permanent line and the nearly constant seasonal and limited edition collections that the brand offers, I never really feel like there isn't  a color that I would like to add to my collection.

I photographed these with the flash setting on my camera in natural lighting as I felt it captured the true color of the shades the best - I'll also be including how many coats each swatch took.

Now, clockwise - and in "ROYGBIV" order, we go!

- French Affair: This is a lightly lavender toned baby pink - i.e. a total "me color". I really like this shade but the cream formula required 3 coats to even out.

- We're In It Together: This was a limited edition shade for Breast Cancer Awareness two or three Octobers ago. It is a neutral to warm baby pink with a very subtle shimmer. This was also three coats for even-ness.

- Madison Ave-Hue: A cool toned fuchsia pink with subtle silver shimmer. I really, really like this shade. It was even in application but I preferred 3 thin coats for opacity.

- Splash of Grenadine: How radiant orchid of them, huh? That's the best way to describe this shade. This was actually on of my first Essie polishes, and probably the one that sparked my obsession. It also had a very similar formula to the previous shade - could work with two, but three thin coats worked very well for me.

- The Girls Are Out: I thought this shade would be too similar to Madison Ave-Hue, but it is a couple shades darker. It also has the silver shimmer to it, but the shimmer is a bit more dense. Three thin coats.

- Jamaican Me Crazy: This was another one of my first Essie shades and the cute name probably drew me in. This is another few shades darker than The Girls Are Out, but it also has almost a metallic quality to it. Surprisingly, this was three coats as well - I normally can pull of metallic-like shades in less.

- Marathin: This shade was part of a limited edition collection a few summers ago and I REALLY like it - not to mention I hauled almost the entire collection! Its a rosy pinky mauve shade that applies really nicely. Three thin coats.

- Angora Cardi: Along the similar hue of Marathin, but several shades darker, this shade is quite chic. I've only recently discovered this one. Three thin coats.

- It's Genius: This is a metallic plummy-rose shade that I again, opted for three coats on rather than less.

- Leading Lady: I find this shade to be a bit...odd. It's like if you took a red jelly shade, applied a few coats, then a coat of glitter, then a few more coats of red jelly. It has a translucency to it and it takes a flawless application of it to look successful. This is three shades and I still find it kind of uneven.

- Recessionista: This is a dark, plum red that my sister enjoys "borrowing" on nearly a weekly basis. It is a true chic shade and great for fall. This was three coats.

- Skirting the Issue: Very similar to Recessionista, but a Bordeaux shade rather than plum. It looks a bit darker in person than it photographed. Three thin coats.

- A Crewed Interest: Love the color, but just cannot with the formula. If anyone knows of a dupe for this shade that isn't streaky and a pain in the butt to apply, let me know. This was four thin coats and I still don't find it perfect.

- Tart Deco: While it performs better than A Crewed Interest, it still struggles from streakiness. It's in pretty good shape after 3 coats.

- Mint Candy Apple: I went CRAZY on mint shades last year, but this one is an iconic drugstore shade. This also has strong blue tones, making it unique and took 3 coats.

- Maximillian Strasse-Her: I LOVE this shade. It is a mint shade with strong gray tones and I have to remind myself to use other polishes than this one sometimes. It took three coats for evenness.

- Parka Perfect: Another gray toned green, but a few shades darker. I really enjoy this shade as well and it was three thin coats.

- Mojito Madness: This may or may not have been another name inspired purchase. One of my original Essie shades, it is a crisp, Kelly green shade. Three coats.

- Sew Psyched: A little off center here, am I? This is an army green shade that I thoroughly enjoy. While I used three coats, you could probably get away with two.

- Power Clutch: This shade is a few shades darker than Sew Psyched, but is very similar in color family. Same formula, I used three coats but you could use two and get the same result.

- Stylenomics: Its not black...almost. This shade is a very, very dark green that I wear on my toes a lot in the wintertime. It's quite chic. This was two coats.

- Turquoise and Caicos: Another one of Essie's cult favorite shades and one heck of a summertime compliment getter. It is a true pastel turquoise and took three thin coats.

- Go Overboard: This is a much darker take on teal, but since it is in the teal color family it does have a sense of brightness to it that keeps it from being too dark of vampy. I really like this shade in the summertime and it took two coats.

- Find Me An Oasis: This is a very, very pale white blue with slight shimmer. The next shade after this one was once my palest blue shade, but this takes the cake on that. I believe this is limited edition but still available and it took three coats.

- Bikini So Teeny: This is the ultimate pale blue (but no longer the "palest" blue) shade and is among Essie's most popular. At work, my colleagues and I call this shade out on one another. If someone is wearing a pale blue nail, 9 times out of 10 they are met with " You're wearing Bikini So Teeny from Essie, aren't you". And the answer is always yes. My store could be sponsored by this shade given how much we all wear it! This swatch was three thin coats.

- Lapis of Luxury: I thought this was far too similar to Bikini So Teeny for the longest time but it really is quite a bit darker and more of a dusty blue. A very pretty shade but has some application issues - its still a touch streaky and translucent after three coats. If you're in a bind, it is a pretty close dupe for the next shade, just with an inferior formula.

- Boxer Shorts: I adore this shade. This is what Lapis of Luxury should have been; a fully opaque dusty blue. Unfortunately, this shade was limited edition (same collection as Marathin). This took three thin coats, but if you're incredibly patient with Lapis of Luxury and add a couple extra coats, you may be able to dupe this pretty well.

- In The Cab-ana: I love, love, LOVE this blue. And, of course it had to be limited edition from last spring if my memory serves me correctly.  It's a bright, crisp blue shade without being neon. This was three thin coats.

- Bouncer, Its Me: Bouncer, just don't let me in. I obviously don't belong here. This was a take on the neon cobalt trend of last summer and was a definite bummer. Four coats, still SUPER streaky and an allover letdown. Its okay Essie, L'Oreal screwed up a take on this shade too.

- No More Film: For lack of a better description, this shade is a blackened blurple. It was released with a late summer collection and I feel that vibe from it. This was one whopping coat!

- Go Ginza: I always assume I have more of this shade family in my collection than I do, but this is a rosier take on lavender. Essie does so many lavender shades that I don't have because I always think this is lighter an less rosy than it is. It is a beautiful color though, with three coats.

- Bond With Whomever: Definitely a similar color, this shade is just a few hues deeper than Go Ginza, but with the same rosiness to it. Very pretty and took three coats.

- Warm and Toasty Turtleneck: Can you say ombre? These three shades work so well together. This was released last fall, I believe? Three thin coats, same deal. The name kinda got me on this one too, I'm not even going to lie.

- DJ Play That Song: Neon shades frustrate me. Some brands get them right...others really don't. This shade is a neon grape shade and it really isn't as terrible of an offender as Bouncer, Its Me but it's along those lines. It took four coats to even out before I gave up and isn't nearly as vibrant as you'd expect it to be when you look at the bottle.

- Sexy Divide: This is a dark metallic purple shade and in all honesty, its not all too unique of a shade. Despite that, it has a great formula and I don't know why I used three coats on this one, because it was great after two thin coats.

- Mademoiselle: This is Essie's most popular polish - apparently anytime something is a cult favorite, I have to try it. However, I don't know if I'm just too impatient of a polisher, or just used to opaque polishes,  but I'm not a huge fan. Maybe it'll grow on me? This was four coats and its subtle to say the least.

- Topless and Barefoot: I went crazy to track this one down a couple years ago and now its a whole lot more readily available. It really is a very flattering light nude that is pink enough to not look like mannequin hands. This was a bit streaky to work with but evens out after three coats.

- Lady Like: This is quite a "me" shade because it's a mauve-y pink shade and I've worn this for meetings and interviews countless times. Is classy while not being invisible - *cough cough* - but this was three thin coats.

- Demure Vixe: This shade is a bit similar to Lady Like but it's a bit more of a brown mauve and has a translucency to it that is actually really well executed. It's easy to work with because it has a kind of iridescence to it that seems to blur mistakes.

- Sand Tropez: If Topless and Barefoot is a pink beige, Sand Tropez is a more neutral beige. This one has a slightly thicker consistency so it applies more opaque and took three coats to even out.

- Yogaga: I kid you not, I've worn this shade a ridiculous amount of times. It was part of the same collection as Boxer Shorts and Marathin, but I think this shade was the first one out of that collection that I hauled. This does photograph quite similar to Sand Tropez, but it is a couple shades darker and definitely more gray toned. This was three coats, but I often get lazy and use two.

- Pilates Hottie: That name! Love it! If you hadn't already guessed, this is the last shade I hauled from the aforementioned collection. It's a difficult one to describe - its not a lavender, but almost like a pale, purple-y taupe shade and I really, really like it. This one was also three coats.

- Chinchilly: Another shade that I've worn the heck out of, its like a warm, gray shade that's almost taupe but not quite taupe. This shade family really appeals to me. This one was three coats, but I often use two.

- Miss Fancy Pants: This one is in the same shade family, but a touch lighter and warmer than Chinchilly. Three coats, pretty even to begin with.

- Mochacino: I freaking love this shade. Literally, I may have worn this on my toes on repeat for at least two months last fall. Its a brownish gray with a shimmer to it, but not overly glittery and the shimmer makes it a dream to apply. This one was three coats to achieve opacity, but it was very even to apply.

- Crocadilly: This is one of those magnetic polishes that were really popular a year or so ago, but no matter what I tried, this will not work for me. I followed directions on Essie's site to a tee and it not only doesn't work, but literally there is no difference in the way it looks whatsoever. I've looked at blogs about these and everyone seemed to be in agreement that they sucked, but does the one I have super suck? I've tried everything! Either way, the color itself is very pretty and it was three thin coats, but with metallic shades I can usually get away with two thicker coats.

- Sable Collar: The fall collections that Essie releases tend to be my favorite, and this is another shade from last year's. It's a metallic brown with purple tones, but I noticed it to be a little thinner in texture than most metallics from Essie. This was three thick coats.

- For The Twill Of It: Same collection...yes. I know. It is a purple-ish, green-ish, brown-ish duo-chome-y shade that is really a pain in the butt to photograph accurately. This was three average coats as it had a bit of a thinness to it, though not as thin as Sable Collar.

- No Place Like Chrome: This one was my sister's, but I somehow intercepted it? Though, the reverse does happen quite often so its not completely a tragedy. This is the texture that I crave from metallic shades. One coat. Bing, bang, boom. DONE.

- Sparkle On Top: This is the lesser of the two holographic flakie shades that I have from Essie. The flakes of this one are just too clumpy and long and while the color is pretty its too bumpy on the nail without a thick, shiny topcoat. This was three coats to show color, but I normally use one.

- Shine Of The Times: I can't believe they discontinued this one (and possibly replaced it with Sparkle On Top) because this is everything a holographic flakie shade should be. Very thin in texture, but it looks different in every light - shifting from blue-ish tones to orange-ish tones. Put this over a deep shade with a matte topcoat. Just do it. This was three coats to show the color, but I normally use one.

- Jazzy Jubilant: This is another nail effect shade and it is basically a shade of different sizes of multi-colored hexagonal glitters. I wish it was more densely packed with glitters, but all in all, its a fun polish. This was three coats.

- On A Silver Platter: This is part of Essie's take on the textured nail trend. I'm actually impressed with the way they jumped onto this trend as Essie's take was quite different than other brands'. This shade is actually pretty cool - a pale gold base with silver texture and blue-ish/violet holographic glitters. This was four thin coats, but very worthwhile.

- Belugaria: Talk about texture. This is definitely a contender for one of my most unique nail polishes. Belugaria is difficult to explain - kind of a matte textured base with silver and black multi-sized hexagonal glitters that peek through. I don't know how I feel about this as an entire mani, but I've used it as an accent nail or two for the holidays. It does sit quite high above the actual nail as it has a really defined and intense texture to it, and it was only two coats. I will say, this can be kind of finicky to work with. Half of the time it's a pain, and the other half it kind of falls into place. My advice. Get a good sized drop onto your brush and try to get it as close to the nail bed in the middle of the nail as you can and distribute it quickly as it dries incredibly fast. I usually use the second coat to kind of fill in any sparse areas.

Essie's website lists more than 300 permanent shades, even without all of the "effects"  shades! They truly do have something for everyone - no matter what you're looking for.

What's your favorite Essie shade?

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick Swatch-A-Palooza!

Saturday, April 5, 2014

Revlon's standout products would most definitely have to be their lip products. For the most part, the brand can boast not only great formulas (if we just forget the Suedes...ick!), but pretty wide shade ranges - there's literally colors for anyone!

When I first started out with drugstore lip products, Revlon was the brand that I really gravitated toward. In all honesty, I think it set the bar high from the get go for me, especially with the Super Lustrous Lipsticks. There's a reason why this line has been around for ages.

To dive right in, I've swatched my entire collection of the Super Lustrous Lipstick line by finish, and I'll provide my thoughts along the way!

Super Lustrous Shines -

The Shines range is the newest addition to Revlon's Super Lustrous line, and were released about the middle of last year I believe, along with the repackaged and reformulated Super Lustrous Gloss. The shines are meant to be sheer lipsticks with a glossy finish, but that have a thinner texture than Lip Butters. The most similar comparison I have is shades like Roman Holiday from Nars. They have a translucency to them that is almost gel like. I have;

- Lover's Coral: I may or may not have purchased this one for the name, because it's just too cute! This is the closest I can get to Corals/Oranges, because while this shade is still quite warm and orange toned it also has a sheerness to it that is quite wearable.

- Pink Cognito: This is one of those "keep in your bag" lipsticks that goes with everything. I can wear this to look polished if I'm doing a super smokey eye and don't want my lips to look too overdone - but at the same time, I can throw this on if I'm running to the pharmacy in yoga pants and a messy bun because I forgot to pick up my prescription on the way home from work this AM (*cough, cough* today..) and look a little less like I've been up since 4AM. It just works with everything.

- Berry Couture: This is my compliment getter of the three. We all know how I feel about darker lipsticks, and this is a sheerer take on that very thing. It's especially great if you want to get into the vampier lip trends, but want to ease yourself into it. I get asked what this is every single time I wear it.

Super Lustrous Mattes -

Real talk, the Mattes in this line can be a touch hit or miss - but of the ones I have, the good does in fact outweigh the bad. This is definitely more emollient feeling of the matte formulas I've tried from other brands (and is definitely a whole lot better than the Suedes that Revlon tried to pass off as matte and longwearing), but they still don't have any shine or glossiness on the lip at all. I have;

- Nude Attitude = Alright...its a concealer lip shade. I need more rosiness in my nudes to make them wearable for me. This is similar to MAC Myth, but a bit more yellow toned. I definitely need to use this with a gloss or a lip liner of a different shade to mix it and make it work for my skin. You win some and you lose some. The opacity is pretty great though!

- Pink Pout = This is most definitely my most worn of the mattes of the Super Lustrous range. It's a subtly cool toned light pink without being too baby pink and it really fares well with my complexion. I think this is one of their most popular mattes, and for good reason. It is also somewhat similar to MAC Pink Plaid.

-  Wine Not = I'm fairly certain that this one has been discontinued, as it is no longer on Revlon's website. Wine Not is a deep Bordeaux shade that is quite similar to MAC Diva in shade and finish.

- Stormy Pink = I love the shade of this one; its a strong blue pink without being too overly bright. However, the formula on this one is lacking - quite patchy and powdery and emphasizes lip lines and dryness like a magnifying glass. Such a shame.

- Smoked Peach = What a pain in the butt this one is to find! Goodness gracious. This shade is unique to everything in my collection, because while it is definitely strongly orange toned, it has a muted quality that makes it more wearable on my skin. The formula on this one is pretty great; nice and opaque but not too powdery.

- Sky Pink = I don't know why I thought shades like this looked good on me (i.e. NYX Strawberry Milk, etc.) but no. Just no. Don't get me wrong, I love pale pinks - but pale pinks like MAC Snob and Saint Germain and the aforementioned Revlon Pink Pout. The common denominator? Strong blue tones. I'm quite cool toned - almost too cool toned as my skin can get very pink, very quick! - and warmer pale pinks like this just don't flatter me. This shade also suffered from the formula issues that Stormy Pink did, but I'm not going to lie and say I shed a tear about it.

Super Lustrous Pearls -

I'm not one for much frost, but some of the Pearl shades in this range have a really understated frost to them that really just appears on the lip as glossiness. I can't speak to the entire Pearl sub-range as I avoid some of the frostier looking shades, but the ones I have (minus one) wouldn't strike me as a Pearl finish if I wasn't already the wiser. I have;

- Violet Frenzy = One of my all time favorite Revlon lipsticks. It definitely is a deeper violet shade, but the translucency of this shade is what makes it so wearable. Applied lightly and its almost like one of those "popsicle stain" shades, but it does build up on itself well without having too much slip to it. A very easy shade to wear, given how intimidating it looks in the tube.

- Cherry Blossom = Did the name of this one have a big part in my choice? Probably. It is a bright cherry shade (no?!) and really doesn't have any detectable pearl to it, in my opinion. Very, very similar to Cherries in the Snow, which is one of Revlon's most iconic and oldest shades still in circulation.

- Gentlemen Prefer Pink = I think this was my first lipstick of the entire Super Lustrous range and yes, the name of this one probably had a lot to do with it as well. Its a light to medium toned slightly cool pink that has a bit of a rosy quality. Again, no detectable pearl to this one as well.

- Porcelain Pink = Why did I buy this? Is it 1995? I think I liked the hue of this shade but just didn't realize how frosty and dated it was. Pretty shade, too much pearl.

- Fuchsia Fusion = You know those Fuchsia shades that feel more like a red fuchsia than a blueish fuchsia? This is one of them. Its definitely a unique one in my collection. The pearl to this one really just translates as shine rather than frost, and it cloud be a touch duo-chrome-y in certain lighting. This one is more opaque than the rest of the Pearls I've tried.

Super Lustrous Cremes -

Alright, we're going to be here for a minute. Can you tell my preferred finish in this line? Revlon just does a really great creme finish. Across the board, they're mostly opaque and incredibly smooth, but yet really don't slide around too much on the lip. And, if you're lucky enough to suit the brown-er lip shades without looking like you're channeling your inner Drew Barrymore circa 1993 (girl, I feel you. That trend just wasn't for girls of our pallor) then Revlon really does have a great range of those hues to choose from in the Creme line. I have;

- Cherries in the Snow = This shade has been around for 61, nearly 62 years! It was launched in 1953 and is still one of the highest selling shades in the range. The reason? Its so flattering on nearly any skin tone. It's definitely your bright, power red that tends to lean a touch pink. Cherry Blossom is very similar, but has a touch more pink and not nearly the cult following this shade has.

- Black Cherry = Again, another cult favorite. The shade is just as the name implies, a deep, blackened cherry shade. A colleague of mine counts this shade as her signature and it is absolutely stunning on her rich, deep skin tone (I think a MAC NC50) and even though my skin is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum I just had to have it. We need to start correlating when we're both going to wear it so we can wear it on the same day!

- Just Enough Buff = This shade is far more translucent than the remainder of the cremes, but it is a neutral toned nude that isn't too overly pale, at least against my fair skin tone. While I prefer rosier nudes, this one definitely does have its place.

- Berry Haute = Definitely a "me" color. This a more purple take on berry rather than a more red one, which makes it a pretty unique color. Many find this similar to MAC's Up The Amp, but in my opinion it is far more muted. I really enjoy this one.

- Va Va Violet = Another pain in the butt to find, but so worth it. A lot of my dark purple lipsticks are matte, so this having a creme finish really sets it apart from a shade family that I tend to, well, hoard. Va Va Violet is really multitasking shade as well; dab it on for a sheer stained look or apply over a lip liner and after a couple coats you've got a vampy, lacquered pout. I love it!

- Primrose = Another one of my favorite shades from Revlon; I actually just talked about this one in my March Favorites! It's literally the perfect pale pink that doesn't lean too overly cool or warm which makes it quite wearable across the board.

- Coralberry = I bought my sister this one a while back because she has warmer skin than I do and out of curiosity I tried it on and loved it, so I picked up one for myself. This is about as orange as I can comfortably go, thanks to the slight pink tones in this shade.

- Temptress = If Primrose is mostly neutral, Temptress is slightly warm. Being that it has enough depth to it, it actually looks quite nice on my lips with the right look.

- Fifth Avenue Red = Why is this guy by himself? This shade was recently re-released in a blast from the past collection that Revlon just put out, which was based on our votes to see what shades we wanted to see again! This shade is pretty much a universally flattering, only slightly blue toned red and was released originally in 1958! I'm sure I have very similar reds in my collection, but hey, it's vintage right?

Revlon has been around for 80+ years for a reason. It is a brand that has consistently delivered on great product and has a timeless way of captivating its customer. The great thing about the Super Lustrous line is there is literally something for everyone regardless of skin tone, age, anything! When you add quality to that, you can't go wrong!

If you've enjoyed this post, let me know as I am strongly considering doing the same for other brands if that is something that you all would like to see! Have a wonderful day/night, wherever you may be!

My MAC Collection - Blush Edition...And a Lesson in Limited Editions.

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

For some unbeknownst reason, I put of delving into the MAC blush world until long after I was sufficiently hooked on the brand's lipsticks. I thought there was nothing that appealed to me.

Yeah right!

As of late I've found myself in total grabby hands status with MAC blushes, but it turns out that nearly all of my darlings in my collection are either discontinued or were part of a limited edition collection. Thus is my life. I fall in love with it and then I'm afraid to use it because goodness knows when I'll find something like it again.

So lets just jump on in, shall we?

- Coygirl (Discontinued)

I reviewed this shade way back when before MUIR moved to Blogspot. Nearly a day and a half after I purchased this, it was discontinued. While it isn't a staple in my collection, its still quite pretty; the sheertone finish makes it a bit more wearable.

 - Dame (Permanent Range)

Dame is my one and only MAC blush from the permanent range. Its a soft pink with a satin finish and is a very wearable day to day shade on my fair complexion. I reviewed this here.

 - Full Of Joy (Limited Edition)

Full Of Joy is has a Frost finish and was part of the Tres Cheek collection last year. This is one of my most prized CCO finds of the universe. Its a lavender pink blush that is perfect against my skin and I just love it so much.

- The Perfect Cheek (Limited Edition)

The Perfect Cheek has a Matte finish and was part of the Marilyn Monroe collection from last fall. I went through heck to get my hands on this thing! Glad I did, its one of the most perfect neutral blushes that I own. I also reviewed this way back when here.

- Pink Tea (Limited Edition)

I found Pink Tea at a CCO when I found Full Of Joy. It has a Satin finish and was also part of the Tres Cheek collection. It's Dame's every so slightly warmer cousin and I really had to have it because of the name.

- Taupe Shape (Limited Edition)

I don't necessarily use Taupe Shape as a blush all to much, but rather a contour. It has a Satin finish and I was wary about the shimmer while using it as a contour but it most definitely works. It was part of the (in my opinion) quite underrated Strength collection from last late fall.

- Unconventional (Limited Edition)

Unconventional was meant to be my replacement for Full of Joy before I found it at a CCO. While they are similar, Unconventional is a bit more pink and wearable for day to day. It has a Satin finish and was part of the Taste Temptation collection from December (In which I hauled for my Birthday!)

- Azalea Blossom (Limited Edition)

You guessed it, another CCO find. This product actually includes two shades that can be used together to "make your own" as well as a beautiful ombre presentation. It was launched with the Daphne Guinness collection at the very end of 2011.

- Evening Stroll (Limited Edition)

Just because this is the last product featured in this post, it just had to be from a CCO (I have a problem, I know). Evening Stroll is a cream blush and lip product and was part of the Casual Color collection that was released just about the time as Tres Cheek was.

So there you have it; my quickly growing and quite CCO funded MAC Blush collection. My goal is to build up my permanent range blushes, but it's MAC - and we all know they have some pretty phenomenal Limited Editions.

What MAC blushes do you have in your collection? Let me know!
